Meet our Therapist

Hi, I'm Alex Thompson, I’m an Occupational Therapist located in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. I am very fortunate to work closely with some incredible clients in the region and collaborate with them to achieve their goals.

Working as an occupational therapist is a real privilege. During my career I’ve been lucky enough to have work with individuals across the lifespan and in various health settings. This has included 6 years working closely with children and families, 3 years supporting older adults, and 2 years working with teenagers and adults with various needs. More recently I have been working in the East Kimberley, as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting children with developmental delays.

Prior to becoming an occupational therapist I worked as a support worker for 10 years, which led me to choose this profession. I am passionate about supporting clients advocate for themselves, and build a life rich in meaning and purpose. Together we explore the steps needed to move in this direction and set achievable goals. For some clients this might look like getting their drivers licence or moving out of home. For others it may look like learning how to take care of themselves or managing symptoms of a condition. Therapy moves at the client’s pace, in the comfort of their environment.

For me, providing a holistic service means taking a step back and considering all factors that impact on one’s wellbeing. This includes thinking about mental health, one’s need for social connection, lifestyle choices, routines, and life roles, rather than focusing on the symptoms of a condition.  It also involves thinking about one’s interests, values and what they find most motivating in life. This is all considered when supporting a client get to a place where they are experiencing life satisfaction and enjoyment.

I believe that an individual’s strengths, interests and support network are key to setting and achieving meaningful goals, and for also building a successful therapeutic relationship.

Success, for me, comes from collaboration. Occupational therapy is a team sport, and there is no better feeling than when your clients experience a win.
